Her Mother's Hope

Hello All!!!

The book I am reviewing today is the first book from the Marta’s Legacy series by Francine Rivers. Her Mother’s Hope begins in the year of 1901 with a girl called Marta living in Steffisburg, Switzerland.  In the beginning phase of the book the story show’s Marta to be a hardworking little girl who achieves good grades in school and does more than the lion’s share of the chores. Marta is dearly loved by her mother and sister but such love is not displayed by her father who beats and belittles her. At the age of 12 Marta’s father decides to remove her from school and put her to work so she can contribute to the household. Marta sees this as a death sentence for with no education (not graduating from high school) a person’s life back then only points to one direction……A life of servitude.  

In this book you watch Marta grow up and fight through her struggles. In her quest to be more than what her father had sentenced her to be she works hard, meets interesting people and travels the world. Her resilience is something to be admired but the marks of her upbringing rare their ugly head in more ways than one causing great difficulties for her.

Admittedly I was a little dubious about reading this book when I first saw it…..never judge a book by it’s cover…lol. But I’m glad I picked it up and brought it home. I loved Marta’s strength and that she did not suffer fools. I liked that she was such a strong character despite her setbacks and that she had the faith and will to fight back. I liked the complexities of the character and how Francine displayed her emotions and calculated thinking.

Her Mother’s Hope is a book about struggles, faith and hope. You will be deeply engrossed into story and  find it difficult to put down as you read Marta’s journey.I look forward to the second installment of the series - Her Daughter's Dream

I've got your number

Helloooooo I'm back!!!

Today i'm reviewing Sophie Kinsella most recent book "I've got your number".

 Poppy Wyatt, Sophie  Kinsella newest character is engaged. Her knight in shining armor is Magnus Tavish an accomplished lecturer/TV personality and author. He could not be more perfect! (so she thinks). Poppy goes to an event at a hotel with her friends, they gush over her engagement ring and take turns to try it on until a fire drill sets the guests in a panic and everyone rushes out except for Poppy who is now combing the place with a fine tooth comb looking for her engagement ring.
Already dismayed and distraught over the loss of her ring, in the height of her panic a person in a hoodie riding a bike swiftly bikes past her a grabs her phone. Poppy has no ring and no phone and her life according to her is now unraveling at the seams as her mobile phone was the number she was giving everyone in the hotel as a contact should they find her engagement ring. In disbelief Poppy sits in the hotel and observes a party of guests while sweeping her eyes across her surroundings and notices a mobile phone randomly sitting in a bin. She reaches in and pulls the discarded phone out checking for damage. She finds that she can use the phone and feels that she has small hope as now she has a number to give to the hotel staff as a contact again, until the phone rings.........And Poppy's whole life is changed.

The beginning of the book was a bit slow but as you continue to read and get a few chapters in, the story picks up pace. By the tail end of the book I was unable to put it down...lol.
Poppy Wyatt reminds me a little bit of Becky Bloomwood from Sophie Kinsella famous Shopaholic series. Their similarities are found in such things as their inability to confront their difficult situations and their outlandish approach (reasonable rationalization in their eyes) to solving their problems. It's funny and annoying at the same time. You want to shake them and say grow a backbone! But these are the things that make up their character and keeps your nose in the book.

My favorite parts of the book was when Poppy engages with the man on the other end of her new found phone. I like how the chemistry between them is introduced and nurtured towards the end.

This book had it's moments when you just want it to get to the point but if Sophie Kinsella uses this book as a foundation for a second book I think i'll enjoy the second book more.

Veil of Pearls

Greetings once again!!!

Today I shall be reviewing the book Veil of Pearls by MaryLu Tyndall.

The book is set in 1811 and is about a girl called Adalia who had been kidnapped into slavery. She remained in oppression for many years before she ran away  and set sail to Charleston.
Now you may wonder how does a slave girl escape and get on a ship in the the year of 1811 unless it's a slave ship? And if you did wonder that, it's a good floating thought. Well to answer that hmmmmm question, Adalia is one quarter black. Adalia's skin is so light that she is able to pass for a white woman and knowing this she takes her chances in a new place and in a new station in life.

As Adaila lives life from a different prospective she faces many obstacles. She loves and fears at the same time, she struggles with her new life and her relationship with God.

The thing I loved most about the book was Adalia's ever growing relationship with Morgan Rutledge. Their romance kept me engrossed in the book as he pursued Adalia persistently and she kept fighting her growing flame of passion for him.

This book is about love, faith and determination.

Veil of Pearls is one of those books that you read on a rainy day enveloped in your comforter, sipping on a delicious hot drink and munching on your favorite snack. Only this kind of creature comforts can match the juicy contents of this novel....lol

If your a lover of romance novel's then this is right up your street

The Red Tent

Today I am reviewing the book The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

The story focuses on Dinah from the bible. For those of you who are not familiar with the bible Dinah is the only daughter of Jacob son of Issac. She was born from the womb of Leah Jacob's first wife.

The Red Tent takes you on a journey with Dinah and helps you to broaden your thoughts on how life could have been for women (mainly) back in those days. I found the book to be extremely captivating as I could not put it down. Tiredness was closing my eyes but I still wanted to get to the next chapter.

The book made me think about how the other characters in the bible experienced life. We know what they did and how they accomplished what they did but as for how they felt in that time period, their concerns, their fears, their joys are not elaborated upon.

This fictional book takes Dinah's story and opens up a world of possibilities for how her life was and how it could have ended up. It also touches on other biblical characters and takes short deeper looks at their lives too.

What an interesting story and so cleverly put together. By the time you finish it you will want Mrs Diamant to expand on the possibilities of life for other biblical characters.


This is a very good read (please remember it's mostly fiction)
